Revelation for Truth or Personal Grudges

Dr K Santhanam, Dr P K Iyengar, Dr H Sethna and Dr A N Prasad–have raised serious doubts about India’s thermonuclear tests of 1998.

K Santhanam, one of the key figures in India’s 1998 thermonuclear test has accused former Atomic Energy Commission chairman Anil Kakodkar of bluffing the armed forces for stating that the country has a credible hydrogen bomb deterrent. http://www.outlookindia.com/article.aspx?262027

Why are these great scientists of the country connected with atomic power capability of the country fighting on a non-issue? Why are they raising doubts about the performance of the detonation of 1998? What really they wish to achieve? Many such questions must be haunting anyone reading the news, interviews and different columns in national newspapers.

Is this debate or the way it is continuing not undesirable? Latest in the series has come in the interview of Anil Kakodkar with Karan Thapar in this week’s Devil’s Advocate on CNN-IBN. Anil Kakodkar has dismissed the views of the elder scientists.

“No, I think this is a totally erroneous conclusion. The yield of thermonuclear tests was verified, not by one method but several redundant methods based on different principles, done by different groups.”

I am of a strong opinion that these scientists must not talk about the issue so lightly and due to personal grudges using very poor language such as “liar”. And any one feels bad to read a reported statement of Homi Sethna, a former top atomic boss. He is reported to have said, “Former President A P J Abdul Kalam was not a scientist and Santhanam is a physicist and he knew what he was talking.” “What does Kalam understand about physics? He can say anything as he was the president and a politician.”

What can be the reasons for such statements? Is it because of the personal envy and grudges? Should a common Indian not expect these scientists to be better human beings?

I wish the media must not go extra miles for covering such controversies.
