Afraid or Envy

On Saturday, It was raining in the morning. With summer at the doorsteps, it was pleasant outside. I thought of finishing the morning walk chore a little earlier. As I was entering sector 40, I observed and experienced something strange. I am sure it was not for the first time, but I don’t why I observed it so keenly.
A large number of sick and hungry stray dogs and perhaps their female counterparts were running helter shelter and barking without any break. Normally, I get scared with just the sight of a dog. But today, I became inquisitive to know the reason for the barking. It didn’t take much time to find the reason. A boy was taking a huge pet dog of good pedigree perhaps for the morning walk. The pet was trying to react to the barking, but the boy managed to control him with help of the strap that was in its neck. It all continued for few minutes till the boy disappeared in the lane quickly. The crowd of dogs dispersed slowly.
Were the dogs barking at the pet or at the boy who was accompanying him? Why should the stray dogs bark at the pet dog that belonged basically to their own caste, may be a little higher one by birth?
Were they scared of him? With belt around his neck, the pet was not as free as they were and couldn’t have harmed them. Were they envy of him, as he was clean, smart and well fed? May be the stray ones are picking up the norms of the human society in which they still are able to survive, though it is not certain that they can do it for long. One day pretty some unscrupulous trader will export them to Chinese shore for being served in their cuisine.
I wish them luck, and for that they must shun being nuisances for us.
