My Planned trip to San Francisco via Beijing

I am planning a trip to USA, to be specific, San Francisco in January 2005. However, I want to satisfy my passion for seeing the historical monuments of one of the oldest civilization and to have a feel of the most-talked about economy of the developing world. I shall like to have a stopover while going in Beijing and while coming in Shanghai.
I am still searching for the airlines that can give me the best deal.
All along I have been traveling on company’s expenses and have been using the best possible airlines and hotels. I never even knew what the total expenditures for my trips were. This time I am to pay all by myself and so want to use my limited resources of a retired person more judiciously. Is it not double standard? I feel no as I can’t afford any thing but the minimal.
I wish some one in Beijing/Shanghai to help me in finding the most conveniently located hotel at a reasonable price. My ego will like some one to receive me at the airport and accompanies me to hotel.
I wish I find some one from an Indian family or some English speaking Chinese who may be the resident of Beijing It will be nice if the person concerned is as free as I am nowadays and accompanies me to the places of historical importance and if possible, gets me a glimpse of the development near around the city. I still don’t know how difficult will be the language problem there. I am eagerly waiting for this trip. Let me see if it materializes. The dates are still not fixed. But around 10 th June 2005, we shall be in USA. For a long time, we have not lived together. Though it may not be living together in real sense of the term, but they all will be nearer to me.
Can someone advice me about the best airline from New Delhi to Beijing, a good hotel, and the best way to see Beijing in two night stay based on his first hand experience?

Some suggestions:
Visit Great Wall (one day).
Visit Forbidden City (one day).
Visit The Ming 13 kings’ Tombs (located about 50 km to the northwest of Beijing)(one day).
There are many other places maybe you will feel interested like Temple of Heaven, Xiushui street for all kinds of craftsman work.
