Water Conservation Through Technology

Can you think of a washing machine that needs no water or powder yet clean dirty clothes in a jiffy? The machine blasts dirty clothes with jets of air primed with negative ions, which have the effect of clumping together dust, deactivating bacteria and neutralizing odours. And you get clean, fresh-smelling clothes coming out completely dry from the new machine, as reported. Will it signal the death knell for the tumbling type of conventional machines that are marketed today? And you estimate the amount of saving of water wastage world over, where recycling of water is not practiced, as washing machines consume huge lot of water. And poor quality of water causes a lot of maintenance problems for the machine itself. So the new machine will save that water. And it will also suit to the fabrics unsuitable for conventional washing such as leather and suede.

This is an innovation coming from Far East that can’t afford to lose so much of water. As reported, even the textile technology through integration of certain nano-technology is busy innovating products that will not be requiring any cleaning rather facilitating air cleaning.

All the technocrats of the developing countries must concentrate on the real issues for their innovations. Some such areas of importance will be efficient bio-mass power generation, effective use of dust and sands generated in huge quantity from coal powered plants, biodegradable plastics to eliminate the present menace, battery storage capacity of solar generator, low power requiring computers as well as small bio-diesel distillation units that will be cheap enough to be commissioned in every village, and many such things. Research technocrats working in national laboratories and institutes of national importance must go for more exposure to the real rural problems and work on innovations that bring out products for the people at the bottom of the pyramid where there is numerically huge market.
