Asian Indians or American Indians- Some Numbers

Since we came here in Santa Clara- this Silicon Valley County in February, I was trying to get some figures about American Indians or Asian Indians as our countrymen have been designated in the Census. I give below some facts from the 2000 United States Census

According to 2000 census, the Indian Americans were 1,678,765 in population- about 0.6 % of the US population. (Total US population in 2000 was 281,421,906)

Between 1990 and 2000, the average annual growth rate of Indian Americans population was 7.6%.

Indian Americans in number are the third largest (16.4%) after Chinese Americans, and the Filipino Americans among the Asian American community.

Among the American Asian communities, American Indians had most employment in management, professional and related occupations at 60%, followed by Chinese (52%) and Japanese (51%).

The annual median income of American Indians at about $59,000 was also the highest of all other ethnic groups ($48,500 for Whites, $36,000 for Hispanics and $33,300 for Blacks.)

Among top Asian groups, American Indian men lead with highest median earnings of $51,904 followed by Japanese ($50,876) and Chinese ($44,831). Among women, Japanese lead with highest median earnings of $35,998 followed by American Indian ($35,173) and Chinese ($34,869).

Among top American Asian communities, Asian Indians and Japanese families had annual median incomes of about $71,000 each, about $10,000 more than all other Asian communities’ families ($59,324). Asian Indians had the lowest poverty rates.

75% of Indian immigrants who work are college graduates. Among top Asian groups, Asian Indians lead with about 64% people having a Bachelors Degree or higher, followed by Pakistani (54%)and Chinese (48%).

40% of American Indians are between the ages of 20 and 40.

About 26,000 Asian Indians enter the US every year on student visas.

90% of Asian Indians live in urban metropolitan areas.

55% of motels in the US are owned by Asian Indians.

However, American Indians are not leaders in possession of home ownership. Among top Asian groups - Japanese (60.8%), Filipino (60%) and Chinese (58.4%) had the highest rates of home ownership. Why is that?

I would have loved to have these data updated to 2005. Has someone the latest one?

P.S. Feature 1, Feature 2 and then Feature 3 worth your attention.
