Media -Two Ends

Anand subscribed to Zee TV of USA for keeping us entertained or perhaps engaged before we came here to Santa Clara. Naturally, it provides a link with India. Fortunately, Yamuna had switched over to Zee TV in India too, because she got bored with Star’s all Ks of Ekta Kapoor’s serials. I myself can’t tolerate these serials, as the stories are so poor. With so many world famous storywriters in the country, I don’t know why the serial producers like to create their own stories full with multi-marriages of both male and female characters and crookedness of some mother-in-law or stepmothers. Why can’t they have some humorous stories? Perhaps, the producers have better understanding of Indian consumers. So why should they bother about the impact it makes on the kids with innocent queries that mostly go unanswered from the parents.

I thought the channel at least, will keep me abreast with the news from the motherland. But the news contents are so poor not only in quality but the subjects. News producers perhaps assume that the news related to rapes, police inactions, or other atrocities interests NRIs here also. So they hardly cover any serious national news. I don’t think any one in Zee TV takes the subject seriously and does some analysis to find out what the customers here in US require to know. They must cover national news, cultural news and also business news- the news related to the country’s economy at least in an hour-long programme. The worse are the ad breaks. Here in USA, as it appears, Pandit Maharaj, Pir Sahab, and Ajmeri Baba are more affluent than manufacturers of products, as the former are mostly the sponsors of the programme.

We also buy ‘India West’ that is a weekly published from California. I found it very informative and with a very positive approach. Front pages are full with positive contents and relate to the achievements of the countrymen in USA. It does publish the ads of Pandit Maharaj or Ajameri Baba and many others. But it is tolerable. It appears from the ads in the media that every sort of celebrities in India finds USA and the Indians here as milking cows good source of earnings. The whole lot of people from religious leaders of various sects to the celebrities in entertainment industry is visiting USA to make money and that also in dollars. Even the political leaders and chief ministers are not behind. And the Indians in USA are bearing them. But all these group or individuals are doing that through some intermediaries that must be taking the major of the cut in collections.

I only appeal to the countrymen in USA. If you really love India, why don’t you spend your money for a good cause such as education and healthcare for your own village in India? I am sure even if you may be from some town or metro, you may trace back and/ or can find a village that you can adopt.
