Ethical Worries For The Nation

Satyam shocked the nation. I came to know about Ramlinga Raju through some of my Andhra friends in Hindustan Motors. He happened to be educated entrepreneur of the new generation and appeared to be smart. His face was lovable as many faces such as one of P Chidambaram are. As such the entrepreneurs in IT sector brought a lot of respectability for the Indians with most of the clients abroad. To be frank, domestic sector hardly used their services in beginning. All the packages of IT applications used to be pretty costly for price conscious Indian industry, particularly the SMEs.

Many like me would not have believed at first that a CEO of an IT enterprise of India could do such a fraud. Where would have Raju learnt the trick that was proprietary of the old family business houses of a particular community?

However, I got another shock yesterday with a news that the senior Satyam senior executives including outgoing CEO and president, chief technical officer, and senior vice-presidents sold sixty lakh shares acquired through ESOPs in 2008 that clearly indicate that they had smelt something fishy and took advantage out of their possession to become multi-millionaires. How could these highly professionals become so selfish with no concerns about other juniors and investors? Does not the education build in some ethics or social responsibility? And then they shockingly left the country to avoid facing any enquiry. Is it not highly irresponsible for such senior citizens?

However, the whole lots of responsible people are engaged in all sorts of unethical tasks or talks. How silly and irresponsible have been the statements of some of the industrialists who have heaped praise on Modi? They want to see him as the PM of the country as if there is dearth of the aspirants. Modi might have done a wonderful work in Gujarat. But why should these industrialists forget about the Peter’s Principle? How can they be sure of the similar performance from him if at all Modi becomes PM? Is it sycophancy or something for getting some immediate benefits from Modi in Gujarat? Or does the intention is to embarrass the ruling party or the prime minister in waiting and other aspirants of Modi’s own party? Whatever be at the back of the minds of these stalwarts of the industry, it came as bad taste to me. I am sure many others must be thinking in the same way. However, can I conclude with a saying from Tulsidasji?
