‘Mangal Pandey -The Rising’

After hearing from Amir himself about the biased review by local press, but extremely excellent ones from the Western ones on TV, I thought to see the movie and enjoy an outing at multiplex ‘Wave’ in Noida. I was amazed. The hall was almost empty. That had only some youngsters who had bunked classes, I don’t know, for movie or for other enjoyment.

The technologies used in making the films are contemporary, almost like the western movies. The artists have acted well, as almost all of them are veterans. But the contents of the story hardly bring any excitement and joy. Mangal Pandey is a historical figure. We have seen the Barrackpore cantonment where it all happened. I am well read on the 1857. The content of movie can hardly be digested. Unfortunately for the filmmaker, the older generation knows the history. We have an image built unknowingly though about these heroes of history people since our childhood. I just couldn’t appreciate the movie. This has happened for the second time in recent years. I had similar shocking experience with the film ‘Ashoka’ with Sharookh Khan and Kareena in lead role. The filmmakers should not take so much liberty with so great a figure of history. But if Mugl-e-Azam could be so satisfying a film, why couldn’t Mangal Pandey be? I again feel Hindi filmmakers do hardly bother about the content of the story.
