Inaugural Speech*- You may also take these tips!

Dear friends of the Trade,
I was never a lecturer. I remained a worker all the life- working myself or working to make others work.
So should I say ‘inaugurated’ and finish or say some thing more? I think, I must put forward some ideas based on my experiences.
Like many of you, I came near a metro from a remote village. And through my school in a suburban area of Calcutta, I went to Presidency College and then to IIT, Kharagpur way back in 1957. Computer was not a subject in those years. Mechanical Engineering was the most preferred branch. And after IIT, I joined Hindustan Motors where I remained for the whole of my life. But HM in those days was one of the top 20 companies of the country. This much is my credential to talk to you.
Let me again impress upon you that you have got an opportunity which millions are not getting in this country. So I request you all to take the maximum out from this opportunity without missing any chance.
Let me prescribe my five principles for a success:
1. Market yourself. And for the same you will have to present yourself better and then learn to communicate well.
2. Aim to learn, and increase your knowledge. Specialise in one but have a breadth too to impress and excel. Learn one more language, perhaps Chinese.
3. Keep an open mind to improve every thing with knowledge of management tools. It may be your kitchen work or your software assignment.
4. Develop capability to innovate and let that become the differentiator.
5. Aim to be an entrepreneur rather than working for a salary. It is not difficult.
I can go on adding many other things but these five are more than sufficient for every one of you.
I know you all are smarter than many. Don’t allow any inferiority complex to creep into your mind. You can achieve any thing. And see the examples all around- Dhirubhai Ambani, ABJ Kalam, and Narayanmuthy.
And even when you are in doubt, look to someone around. At least there will be ONE all the time ready to help you.
I again repeat- ‘utilise the opportunity you are being given in this seminar to the best’.
And I am really thankful for patiently listening me. But please remember my words.
* I went to Raj Kumar Goel Institute of Technology, Ghaziabad on December 27, 2004. It was after many years that I again put on an official dress-suit with tie. It happened as one Arvind Singh is professor and head of the department of MBA course. He worked for me in Harig Crankshafts. He had invited me for inaugurating a seminar on self-improvement for his students. Every thing went on well. The lecture was as given above but I spoke for almost two hours extempore and answered all queries and also provided my tips to get a success into the jobs. I suggested the faculty to provide some additional English communication course just after they get into the course. It is absolutely essential for them. I had interactions with its director and other faculty members too. They have a lot of opportunity. And they can do a lot. One suggestion was to call a meeting of the heads of mechanical engineering department of all the engineering colleges of the region including, Noida and Greater Noida; and explore the possibility of a better interaction with the industries of the region. The region can be developed as an important hub for manufacturing components for the heavy engineering industries.
