Telengana, Gorkhaland, Vidarva, Bundelkhand, and …

Telengana story is totally political and has come out of the individual ambition. Its creation will hardly serve the cause of the region and make it develop faster. It will certainly add to the governance cost with new capital and so many duplications.

And then where do the divisions stop- Gorkhaland, Harit Pradesh, Bundelkhand, Kamtapur, Lalgarh, and then Bhojpur, Mithila and Magadh? Will it lead for a stronger India or stronger state? Will it help the balanced development? Perhaps yes, but why can’t be done with the present administrative setup? What happens if Kodas keep on working to suck the treasury and the people?

And can the creation of Gorkhaland or Vidarva solve the problems of its people? Will the smaller state be better for unscrupulous politicians and sycophants among bureaucrats?

Will the move of the smaller states not help separatists? Why can’t the leadership consensually agree to a set of criteria for creating a new state, as the language was with the first state reorganization after independence? Why should it be left to the protests and fast-unto-death of some so-called leaders?

Suddenly the government’s nod to create Telengana has created a situation that is putting the nation again on fire taking attention of the government and the people from the urgent issues of price rise and increasing poverty throughout the country.

Is this not politics and state sponsored political terrorism? Why couldn’t the government talk with all the groups before giving the nod?

I, for one, don’t agree the logic behind smaller states. Neither Gorkhaland nor Harit Pradesh is needed to be separate for making the lot of the people there better. But smaller Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh will certainly make it more manageable.

I wish the constitution provides for referendum in such cases so that the wishes of the people are known.

PS: How silly and immature is the statement when the powerful trouble-shooter Pranab Mukharji says, ‘no more new states’

Mayawati has woken up after proposing the trifurcation of Uttar Pradesh with her next correction note to advise the necessity of a new state of Purvanchal.

Sarvesh Upadhyay commented on your note “Telengana, Gorkhaland, Vidarva, Budelkhand, and …”:

“Jharkhand division was total failure. Too small states will have to depend on centre for all development. Opposing government in Centre-state will lead to blokade of funds and thus states will be helpless. The package promised to Bihar for division is not yet given.”

“Common Men in Hyderabad also thinks that it will be a big failure, all the districts which are covered in telengana lag in agriculture, nothing much would happen but common men will suffer due to rise in prices of day to day commodities.”
