Rising Bengal

I see Bengal rising or resurging right in Noida. Every morning when I go out for walking, I see hordes of maids coming in for working in the residences of Noidites. When I pass by a big multi-storied housing complex such as Kailash Dham in Sector 50, it is almost a factory like scene. All these maids, if they wish so, can very easily earn more than $2 a day taking many a family out of the definition of ‘below poverty line’ or BPL as they say.

Believe it, almost 60% or more are from West Bengal. Some may be Bangla Deshi too. Surprisingly, many of these women and girls are living without any male member from the family. Unlike the good old days, today these women don’t want to remain as mute spectator of the poverty at home. Hearing from the women in neighbours, relations or acquaintances, they come out of their villages in Bengal for finding a good honourable living. Many have picked up Hindi, and dress too unlike the Bengali women in salwar kurta.

Is it not a good sign or indicator that Bengal is changing? As I remember in 5os and 60s, the local Bengalis were not ready to work as even operatives in HM. All the lab assistants in Presidency College were all non- Bengalis. Today, it all has changed. The younger generation is ready to do anything for their living. I wish the leftists would have allowed Bengali to work instead of unionise them. And I see Bengal getting its right place in the nation’s economy again.
